The Uzhgorod Castle (X-XI cc)- this stone pearl rising above the blocks of the town is attracted by numerous guests and is full of legends. It is a peculiar visit card of the ancient town. The old castle-museum always welcomes its guests and tells the story about the difficult life of this region.
The exhibits of the Transcarpathian museum of Folk Architecture and Life opened in 1970, represent the life of different ethnic groups in this region from the end of the XVIII-th c - till the beginning of the XX-th c.
The Castle of “the Evil Maiden”, architectural monument from the XII-XIV cc – the guard of Uzhanska dolyna (valley) is situated in the village of Nevytske, not far from Uzhgorod in the recreational part. The beauty of nature is interwoven with the romantic past there.
The buildings of Greco-Catholic Cathedral and the scientific library of Uzhgorod national university – the former Episcopal residence – were built in 1646 by count Drouhet in the eclectic style with the elements of baroque and eastern style. These are old architectural monuments from the Middle Ages.
The building of the Transcarpathian regional philharmonic society – former Jewish synagogue – was built in 1904 in the pseudomauritian style. The Honoured Transcarpathian Folk Chorus is based there.
In the Suburban village of Horyany, smothered in the greenery of gardens, one of the oldest architectural monuments of Transcarpathia is situated – The Rothonda of Horyany (the church). Its fresco paintings date back from the XIV-XV cc.
The building of the former Zhupa (territorial unit) administration – architectural monument of the XIX c built in the baroque style – is of the utmost interest for tourists. The museum of Art, opened in 1948, is situated in it now.
Roman-Catholic Cathedral was built in 1766 in the style of late baroque. The present building reminds us the constructions of the XVII c (the I-st half): the front of it is completed with the belfry with the heavy Latin cross.
Pokrovska Orthodox Church was built in 1930 by Russian emigrants. It reminds the Orthodox Cathedral in Kolomna (Russia). What concerns the style – it’s a typical Northern-Russian tent church, while its domes originate from Muslim mosques.
Exotic plants, of which there are more than 300 species in Uzhgorod, originally were cultivated by the gymnasium teacher Laudon at the end of the XIX c. A park in Uzhgorod is named after him. One of exotic beauties is the Japanese cherry-tree. In spring it colours the embankments in bright pink.
