Kyiv-Pechers'k Lavra - is the most ancient and glorious Orthodox monastery which was founded by the monks St. Antony and St. Theodosius. The caves ("pechery") are situated near the Brestovo summer residence nearby Kiev in 1051.

The monastery became the centre of spreading and maintaining of Christianity in Kiev Rus in 11th century. The Monastery was granted the "Lavra" status (which means "a big monastery") in 12th century.

In 18th century Lavra has became the foremost church magnate in Ukraine. It owned three cities, seven towns, about 200 villages, more than 70,000 serfs, 2 paper-mills, 11 brick-factories and 6 glass-factories, more than 100 public houses, 2 harasses. Kiev-Pechery Lavra mastered many Ukrainian, Russian and Byelorussian monasteries and so called "waste lands" (such as Kitayevskaya, Nikholskaya and others situated at the suburb of Kiev) including their lands and serfs.

In fullness of its time Kiev-Pechery Lavra has played very important role in developing of ancient Russian culture. It was the center of writing chronicles. Here works of foreign authors were rewritten and translated into church-Slavic language. The outstanding chronicles' writers such as Nestor (the author of "The Tale of Bygone Years"), Nikon, Sylvester also worked in Lavra.
A lot of outstanding persons are buried on the territory of Lavra. The founder of Moscow Yury Dolgoruky is buried in Spasa Church in Berestov.

Currently the monk's community divides the Lavra's territory with National Kyiv-Pechers'k Historical-Cultural Preserve. The Lavra's main sacred objects of worship are holy relics of the Reverend Pechers'k Fathers that rest in the Near and Far Caves.

In1990, a unique architectural ensemble of the Lavra was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Register.
